Abstract
The innovative features of small modular reactors (SMRs) present major opportunities for nuclear power’s global expansion. This talk examines the status and implications of SMRs’ development and address the following questions. What are the advantages and challenges of SMR with respect to nuclear safety and security? How should we address these challenges? How can technology and policy work together for sustainable development of SMRs?
Bio
Man-Sung Yim is Professor of the Department of Nuclear and Quantum Engineering, Associate Vice President of the International Office, Head of Office of Global Initiatives, and Director of Nuclear Nonproliferation Education and Research Center (NEREC) at Korea Advanced Institute of Science and Technology (KAIST). Formerly, he worked at Korea Atomic Energy Research Institute, and taught at North Carolina State University (NCSU) and MIT. He was also a joint faculty between Oak Ridge National Lab (Global Nuclear Security Technology Division) and NCSU, Sam Nunn International Security Fellow at Georgia Tech, a member of North Carolina Science Advisory Board on Air Toxics Emissions, and a member of Nuclear Nonproliferation External Steering Committee of Idaho National Laboratory in the U.S. Upon return to South Korea in 2011, Prof. Yim founded NEREC (Nuclear Nonproliferation Education and Research Center) for national capacity building in nuclear nonproliferation and started NEREC International Summer Fellows program to train future global leaders of nuclear nonproliferation. He is currently a member of Korean National Academy of Engineering, the Scientific Program Committee of Comprehensive Test Ban Treaty Organization (CTBTO), International Radioactive Waste Management Advisory Committee of Emirates Nuclear Energy Corporation (U.A.E.), and Global Forum on Nuclear Education, Science, Technology and Policy of OECD/NEA. He serves as Associate Editor (Asia) of Nuclear Technology for American Nuclear Society, and a member of Editorial Advisory Board of Progress in Nuclear Energy and International Journal of Nuclear Security. Professor Yim’s research work centers around the theme of safe and responsible use of nuclear energy with the activities covering nuclear fuel cycle, nuclear waste management, nuclear safety, nuclear nonproliferation, and energy policy. He has recently written a textbook entitled, “Nuclear Waste Management: Science, Technology, and Policy” with Springer Nature. Dr. Yim studied at Seoul National University (BS/MS, nuclear engineering), University of Cincinnati (PhD, nuclear engineering), and Harvard University (SM/ScD, environmental health science).

At 12:15 (Finnish time) on Tuesday, 14 September 2021, Prof. Yim will be the official opponent in the public defence of Edoardo Tosoni's Doctoral Dissertation entitled Novel methods of scenario analysis for the probabilistic risk assessment of nuclear waste storage and disposal facilities. The defence will be held in Lecture Hall H304 (Otakaari 1) and via remote technology at https://aalto.zoom.us/j/64272127247
Due to COVID-19 restrictions, only those participants who have obtained a prior permission from the Custos by 9 September are allowed to attend the defence physically in the Lecture Hall.
Aalto Systems Forum
The growing challenge of our time is the need to understand and to manage wholes, i.e. systems. Problems in technology, economy, organisations and the environment are strongly interconnected, include multiple criteria and evolve dynamically over time. Systems Sciences as a field of scientific inquiry develops tools and approaches which help address these problems.
Aalto Systems Forum provides a platform for a dialogue between practitioners and researchers, based on major research results and accompanying insights which are presented by leading international scholars.
Aalto Systems Forum is organized by the Systems Analysis Laboratory research group at the Department of Mathematics and Systems Analysis of Aalto University School of Science. http://sal.aalto.fi/en/aaltosystemsforum/
