M.Sc. (Tech.) Anna Matala will defend the dissertation "Methods and applications of pyrolysis modelling for polymeric materials" on 15 November 2013 in lecture hall E, Otakaari 1, Espoo. The dissertation investigates methods and applications for pyrolysis modelling in fire simulations, especially concentrating on parameter estimation and the material modeling process of complicated materials such as cables and composites. We are happy to have new professors join our research SAL team and teaching faculty.

Dr Kai Virtanen has been a long term faculty member in the Systems Analysis Laboratory most recently as a lecturer. He was nominated to the five year position of professor of practice on November 1st. His research field covers systems modelling ranging from optimal control, dynamic optimization and differential games to decision analysis with bayesian nets and dynamic influence diagrams. He has been a long term coordinator and project manager in our very important research contract with the Finnish Air Force. He received his doctorate in 2005 at the Helsinki University of Technology.

Dr Pauliina Ilmonen who was recently recruited to the department of Mathematics and Systems Analysis as a lecturer in statistics has now been nominated to an assistant professorship in statistics. She got her doctorate in the University of Tampere in 2010 and the thesis dealt with Independent Component Analysis. Before coming to Aalto she did research at the Université Libre de Bruxelles, Belgium. She will be teaching our statistics courses.

PhD Enrico Bartolini joins our team as a new assistant professor. Enrico comes from the University of Modena and Reggio Emilia, Italy, and has been previously a postdoc at University of Bologna, Italy, and a postdoctoral fellow at HEC Montréal and CIRRELT, Canada. Enrico does research in Operations Research and Combinatorial Optimization. His research activity concerns the study and development of heuristic and exact algorithms for solving combinatorial optimization problems, and particularly network design and vehicle routing problems. He will teach the course linear programming in the fall.
