We present a new concept for passenger traffic in elevators, based on passenger journeys. A passenger journey is a batch of passengers whose departure and destination floor are known. Our concept enables the estimation of the passenger arrival process and the floor-to-floor description of the traffic. In our case study, arrivals seem to be compound Poisson, thus generalizing the earlier assumption. We shall discuss implications of this result to elevator planning, simulation and control.
